Private House, Dornoch, Sutherland
The site at Elizabeth Crescent was occupied by a single dwelling built in the 1980’s which was demolished as it no longer met the expectations of the client in terms of space planning, thermal efficiency and optimising the views.
The proposal creates a contemporary open plan, internal layout that maximises the use of natural light and capitalises on the easterly facing aspects over Royal Dornoch Golf Club, Dornoch Beach, the Firth and the North Sea. To this end ORA elected to elevate the ‘public realms’ and the master bedroom to the first floor. Guest bedrooms are located on the ground floor, along with ancillary accommodation such as the utility and plant rooms.
The new 1 1/2 storey dwelling adopts a low carbon approach, using Passivhaus Principles, with high levels of insulation, MVHR and materials sourced locally. The external finishes take their influence form the local vernacular buildings, – Scottish timber, wet dash render, natural slate and natural stone sourced from local quarries.
