Private Dwelling, Aberdour, Fife

Nestled in the old part of Aberdour, Fife is a site that has been vacant for a number of years. Surrounded by a natural stone wall and accessed off a quiet street this southerly sloping site has magnificent views over the village, Black Sands beach and the Lothians beyond.

The private client commissioned ORA to design a family home that was modest in appearance, provided the required accommodation that took advantage of the views and considered the mobility issues than can be associated  with ageing. It also had to be thermally efficient and follow the principles of Passivhaus design. The proposal takes full advantage of the sloping site by presenting itself to the street as a bungalow but then revealing its true self, as you enter the house, with living and master bedroom accommodation on the entry level; studio with terrace in the roof space; and further bedroom accommodation at the lower ground floor level. Many of these spaces then continue outside by means of full height glazed screens, terraces and balconies.
