70 Bed Care Home, Cambridge Road, Great Sheldon

First Care Homes (Cambridge) Ltd is a privately owned care home operator based in the United Kingdom. First Care Homes (Cambridge) Ltd is a quality accredited multi award winning health and social care operator who provide care, support and treatment services to elderly people.

Oliver and Robb Architects (ORA) were commissioned by First Care Homes (Cambridge) Ltd to design a new 70 bedroom Care Home on the site of the former Elms Vehicle Garage and Sales Rooms. The new Care Home has been designed specifically for elderly residents with dementia. The ORA design ensures that each floor should be sub divided into 2 clusters to ensure that staff and nursing resources are distributed efficiently and effectively.

The design prioritises the residents’ accessibility to the outdoors wherever possible and the building orientation has been utilised to optimise daylight, sunlight and views. The building design, internal layout and specification also complies with the following: Care Quality Commission Standards, First Care Employers Requirements and Current Building Regulations.

The new entrance has been relocated to the north/west corner of the site. This has allowed car parking and refuse storage to be screened by the building whilst ensuring that the contemporary building frontage and high quality landscaping address the main road in an appropriate manner. The main entrance and visitor waiting area addresses the new vehicular entrance and Cambridge Road. This key node point includes a resident first floor day space with feature roof terrace. These spaces have been designed to be light, open and welcoming. A feature “gull winged” roof completes the corner in a contemporary fashion.
